Make New Friends, But Keep the Old

One of the many branches of the Lawless family came to Poway on Friday. We’ve been friends with almost the entire the Lawless family for as long as I can remember. Literally.

But to make a long story short, we have this interesting history of somehow always ending up in the same neighborhood, town, or in a neighboring town. I was born in the bay area. The Lawless Family lived about an hour (this is a guess) away. One of the many Lawless branches (as in one of the brothers with his wife and kids) moved to San Diego. Another branch left for Virginia. We were still in the bay area. Fast forward several years later. We were moving to San Diego because of my father’s job. To make a long story short, we ended up in the same neighborhood as Lawless Family #1. Another several years later, VA Lawless Family moved the next town over. Lawless Family #1 had earlier moved the next town over as well. There was a 45min. distance between us. We saw each other a lot.

A couple years later, both families picked up and moved to Oklahoma. It was a very sad day as best friends bade their farewells.

This past weekend Lawless Family #1 came to Poway. There’s a very large and close-knit group of home schoolers in Poway and now all over Southern California. Many of us are all grown up now. What was once a group of crazy barefooted kids are now college students, college graduates, some married with growing families. We had a large “Park Day” on Saturday and many of us were there all afternoon and into the evening.

It was wonderful to be with old friends again, kicking back on the grass, discussing life, playing soccer, Frisbee and Capture the Flag. But the best part was just being with each other and making new memories.
